Derby Loss For TD U15 Lions

After a team dropping out of the league in week one and a bye in the Cup in week two, the U15 Lions finally got their season underway with a competitive loss at home to Taunton St Andrew’s on a Sunday. A number of players were on County duty this week and others with school matches, D of E and family commitments; so this presented an opportunity for a number of our capable U13s to play up. They all did well.

Skipper, Rowan Keyte won the toss and opted to bat first. Taylor Flitton (21) and Harry Love (26) batted positively and put together a 54 run opening partnership before Harry top-edged a pull and was caught at mid-wicket. Rowan Keyte (21) joined Taylor and he played a number of well-timed sweeps into the leg side as they put on a further 18 runs. Taylor was unlucky this time ... having been dropped several times previously ... as he hit a full toss straight into the hands of Alex Couch at deep backward square leg. The score had moved on to 85 after 14 overs when Rowan snicked behind to give Ben Davies a juggling catch and then Cole Willoughby (1) mistimed a push into the legside to present Nathan Yarde with an easy caught and bowled. Oliver Wrelton (0) was well caught, low down, by Toby Lee to give Alex Cunningham (2-19) his second wicket. Bryce Bedingfield (11) and Will Baverstock (15 not out) saw the total to 109-6 when Bryce was bowled by Yarde (2-32). Jacob Searle (7) supported Will with some useful runs to see the Lions to 121-6 off their 20 overs. Perhaps, 20/30 runs short of their initial target?

Toby Warner (41 not out) and Alex Cunningham (34) started very aggressively to put on 52 runs in 6.3 overs. Despite this onslaught, Alex Chaffey bowled really well and his three overs went for only 16 runs. It was Theo Harlow (3-0-28-1) who claimed the first wicket as Alex Cunningham mistimed another drive and was caught at short extra cover by Rowan Keyte. Ben Davies (28) continued the momentum until he was caught by Oliver Wrelton at backward point off the bowling of Henry Hudson (2-0-21-1). Will Baverstock continued his fine game with an impressive 4-0-14-1 as he clean bowled Devon County U15 Alex Couch (5). He was well supported by spinner, Taylor Flitton (3-0-14-0) as they made it hard for the batsmen to score. Toby Warner finally saw St Andrew’s home with a four to the square leg boundary in the 17th over.

Some pleasing cricket from this young side ... notable the batting of U14s Taylor & Harry and senior pros Rowan & Will; a glimpse from U13 Bryce as well. On the bowling front ... U13 Alex, Taylor and Will were impressive, first wickets for Theo & Henry.

Points to build on for future games: we need to set a tougher target for sides to chase (150+); change bowlers when a batsman gets on top and; look at field settings to ‘make a small or moderate total harder to chase down’.
