Young Lions In Fine Winning Run Chase

A very sound all round batting display saw a Young Lions team secure a good league victory at home to Staplegrove on Sunday.

Staplegrove batted first and had moved onto 25 runs by the fifth over before Alex Chaffey (3-0-21-1) had Toby Bishop (3) caught by Ged Williams-Pritchard. Opening bowler Rupert Baverstock (4-0-21-0) was impressive with his line and length in his spell, well supported by Bryce Bedingfield (2-0-15-0). Ed Smith (27) and Ryan Hibbert (52 ret) proceeded to give the Staplegrove innings some impetus and the Lions had to wait until the 12th over to claim their second wicket. Ed Smith, beautifully bowled by skipper Will Baverstock (3-0-9-2). Will struck again in his next over; bowling E Webber (1) to reduce Staplegrove to 81-3 after 14 overs. Ryan Hibbert went on to a hard-hitting (11 x 4) half century and he retired with the score at 100 in the 16th over. Rupert Baverstock then held a high catch at midwicket to Give Ged Willians-Pritchard (3-0-15-1) the wicket of R Burns (7). O Chubb (21 no) struck some good late boundaries to see his team to a very useful 133-4 after their 20 overs.

Rowan Keyte (13) got the Lions off to a quick start, but with the score at 19 he was bowled by the accurate Burns (4-0-25-3) for 13. Skipper Will Baverstock (17) and Ollie Wrelton (15) each struck three boundaries as they continued the Lions’ attacking approach. In the 5th over Will was bowled by Burns and two overs later Ollie was stumped by Toby Bishop to give Burns a third wicket. The Lions were now 54-3. Henry Hudson (20) and Alex Chaffey put on another 35 runs in the next five overs before Henry mistimed a drive and was caught by Ryan Hibbert off the bowling of Chapman (2-0-11-2). A six and a four from Bryce Bedingfield (14) saw the Lions close in on the Staplegrove score, but when he was bowled by Chapman and then Alex Chaffey (38) was caught by Hibbert off the returning Stuckey (2.5-0-38-1) it was left to Ged and Rupert to see the Lions over the line in the 16th over.

A good all round performance from some senior pros and a number of young Lions. Great bowling, particularly from Will, Rupert, Alex & Ged and a strong run chase led by another fine innings from Alex Chaffey well-supported by Henry Hudson, Will, Ollie, Bryce & Rowan.

We also owe a big vote of thanks to Andy Baverstock for umpiring and all the ladies who helped provide and layout refreshments during and a super brunch after the game.

Well done everyone!
