Deane U15 Win Regional Cup Semi-Final

A 10.30am start at Wembdon CC saw Thornbury win the toss and elect to bat in the Regional U15 Vitality Cup Semi-Final. Openers Choughhule (14) & Oliver-Derkersen (12) used the pace of the Deane’s seamers and the lightning-quick outfield to get Thornbury off to a flyer; putting on 32 runs in the first four overs. The introduction of left arm orthodox spinner, Freddy Stevens (4-1-30-2) in the fifth over brought immediate success when Oliver-Derkersen struck a long hop into the grateful hands of Aman Rao at deep mid-wicket. Stevens struck again in his next over. This time Josh Thomas took a head high catch at mid on. Thornbury were 49-2 off seven overs. Syed (34) & Ryan Price (16) continued to pounce on any loose deliveries. They were helped by some indifferent Deane ground fielding on a very dry and uneven outfield, putting on almost fifty runs before off-spinner, Taylor Flitton (3-0-14-3) bowled Price with his first bowl. He soon picked up another when Syed lost patience and put a lofted off-drive straight to Charlie Sharland at extra cover. Will Baverstock pulled off a well judged running catch to dismiss Riggs (6) and give Flitton his third wicket ... 108-5 after 16 overs. The returning Sharland (4-0-14-1) then bowled Foulner (4). This was followed by a frantic last few overs which saw two run outs. The first when Sharland swooped in from short extra cover to beat Clarke (2) to the non-strikers end; the second a superb throw from the deep by Will Baverstock to see off the dangerous Halliwell (13). Thornbury completed their allotted 20 overs on a respectable 132-8.

Skipper Ben Chaffey set his stall out early to ensure his team chased down the runs as he unusually took on the anchor role. It was Aman Rao (37) who proved the more aggressive; lifting Ryan Price over long off for six in his second over. Both batsmen ran well between the wickets and looked to see off the opening attack. After 6 overs they had moved the score to 39-0. In the tenth over, after two glorious cuts to the third man boundary Aman made his first error as he clipped a delivery straight to Foulner at mid-wicket to break another fine opening partnership at 72-1. Charlie Sharland (18) looked well in control until he too produced a loose shot and was caught by Ryan Price at cover ...109-2. Josh Thomas (11) chased a wide delivery only to get the finest of nicks and was snapped up by wicketkeeper Oliver-Derkersen with Taunton Deane still needing five runs to win. Ben Chaffey (43 not out) had it covered though, as he and Rufus Williams-Pritchard saw the team to 134-3 after 17.3 overs.

A very well-paced and mature batting performance to seal the victory and reach the Regional Vitality U15 Cup Final. There were also some fine catches, but our ground fielding and some throwing was far from impressive. This, along with 26 extras (no byes) contributed far too many easy runs to the Thornbury score. These were some aspects off our game we would need to put right in the afternoon final? St Fagan’s (Wales) were waiting as they had already secured their place with a comfortable 9 wicket win over Hook & Newnham Basics CC.
