Taunton Deane U15s won the Regional Final in Vitality National U15 Cup at Wembdon CC on Sunday with a comprehensive 41 run victory over St Fagan’s CC (Wales). They now go through to the National Finals at Rugby School, Rugby as one of only four teams left in the competition.
As in the semi-final The Deane lost the toss, but this time St Fagan’s chose to field first. Ben Chaffey (37) & Aman Rao (4) looked to continue their rich vein of form as an opening partnership, but this time it wasn’t to be as Aman chipped to mid-off with the score on just 17. This brought Charlie Sharland (47) to the wicket and he once again should his power and precision as he picked the gaps and cleverly lifted the ball over the in field. The pair put on 72 runs in good time when Charlie tried to pinch a cheeky single and was run out in the eleventh over with the score pat 89. Josh Thomas (52 ret) then produced the innings off the final as he drove majestically through the covers and worked the spinners into the empty areas on the leg side. Meanwhile, skipper Chaffey repeated his semi-final performance by rotating the strike and running brilliantly between the wickets to turn singles into twos and twos into threes. Ben was eventually stumped off leg spinner Harry Burrows with the score at 130 and less than five overs remaining. Josh brought up his impressive half century with his seventh boundary. Rufus Williams-Pritchard (10) produced a useful little cameo at the end of the innings with the help of Taylor Flitton (4 no) as The Deane set Dt Fagan’s an imposing 172 runs to win.
Aman Rao got Taunton Deane off to a great start when he yorked star-batsman Callum Nicholls (1) in the second over of the St Fagan’s innings.A steady partnership then followed as Sherwood (23) and Mehotra (39) looked to steer the St Fagan’s Innings towards the Deane total ... but the run rate required was constantly on the rise! The ground fielding and throwing in was much improved from the morning game as the bowlers and fielders began to starve St Fagan’s of runs. A smart stop and throw from Harrison Hambly saw Sherwood run out attempting a second run. 43-2. Another partnership began to build, but spinner, Freddy Stevens stopped this when Ben Mulghay (21) dragged onto his stumps, leaving the score at 74-3 after 13 overs. Zane Zaman (24) threatened for a while to get St Fagan’s back in the game, but he was bowled by Harrison Hambly (1-0-3-2). At 130, Harrison also claimed the final wicket when Taylor Flitton pouched a catch at long on to dismiss the patient Mehotra. Taunton Deane had won by 41 runs.
It was a great day for the club as they won the U15 Regional Cup Final for the first time. All players should be very proud of their contributions to the team success. Harder challenges are to come as we head to the National Finals to meet the best U15 teams in the country!
A big thanks to Dave Smith for his counsel to the players and to me and Steve Nelson for his help throughout the day. Thanks also to Andy Baverstock & Rob Stevens for scoring. It was also great to see all the parents and supporters from our club and from a number of other Somerset clubs on the day. Wembdon CC were great hosts and it was a privilege to play at their impressive ground.
We are looking forward to the next challenge on August 12th!
