U11 Greens vs North Curry

The Greens U11 played their first competitive friendly at Castle on Sunday, the forecast heatwave failed to materialise and the game was played in overcast, windy and on occasions very wet conditions. The coach’s forecast of the game being completed in about 2 hours turned out to be a serious under-estimation. Apologies to the parents for that!

The greens captain Jasmine won the toss and elected to field.

There was some excellent bowling and fielding from the greens. Particular highlights were Faith bowling a maiden over for her first over and taking a wicket in her second. Megan Driskel bowled 2 very tight overs giving away no extras and taking a wicket with the first ball of her second. Megan Clark took a wicket with her first ball of the match. Lucy also contributed to the wicket taking. In the final over Jasmine came on and took 2 wickets. I could see plenty of backing up taking place and also walking in towards the wicket as the bowler was running up – all good stuff.

Well done to Ami and Lulu who shared the wicket keeping duties.

We did give away a few too many wides so we have something to work on going forwards but we took 6 wickets overall and fielded really well.

When it came to our batting I think we showed a bit more match nous frequently snatching little 1s and 2s where the opposition would not have. There were also some lovely shots on display. Our openers - Megan D and Lily - both moved the ball around well and ran between the wickets sharply. Faith and Erin started strongly with some good shots and also ran between the wickets well. Issy and Lucy worked well as a pair with some good running between the wickets and some good shots. Lucy was unlucky to be given out to a ball that seemed to bounce more times than a bouncy ball dropped from a very great height. Lulu and Ami came out as the fourth pair and again played some lovely cricket. Lulu put the pressure on the bowlers with a lovely 4 from the first ball she faced. By this stage the match was largely won and Jasmine and Megan C came in to see us home. Jasmine hit a couple of lovely 4’s during this period.

What really stood out for me was the running between the wickets – players seemed to be ready to run and squeeze out the runs when they were available. Our top "wicket adjusted scorers" were Lulu, Issy and Megan D. Well done.

As with the bowling there are still things we need to work on – playing the straight balls with a nice straight bat will cut out some of the wickets we lost, we also did not score any 6s!

The girls also stood up for each other during the game which was really good to see.
