Comprehensive Win (Spoiler Alert!)

We played a mixed Wiveliscombe team today - they had some experienced players as well as some first timers.

Young Sam in particular stood out as he was barely taller than the wickets (well approximately 50% taller) and had what appeared to be full length leg pads on – which made it difficult to run – it would have felt unfair to run him out.
He ended up facing some of our quicker bowlers and did really well to stand up to them.

Erin was our captain and won the “find the grass” competition. She chose to field first.

Ami and Emily shared the wicket keeping duties and both of them did really well stopping most of what came their way.

We took 12 wickets today - a mix of bowled, run out and even a couple of catches.

Megan opened the bowling with a great first over, it took one ball to get her eye in but she then took 2 wickets in her first over and 1 in her second.

Ami, who keeps telling me she can’t bowl, proved herself wrong taking 2 wickets – 1 in each over and only conceding 3 runs with no extras. Brilliant bowling Ami.

Jessica took 3 wickets and was on the verge of a hat-trick in her first over but the hat-trick ball unfortunately did not materialise. Her second over produced 1 wicket for only 1 run and 4 dots. A great spell Jessica.

Lucy bowled a wicket maiden for her first over – Ami taking a good catch that she had to run to get to and in her second over Lucy only conceded 1 run. Great work Lucy.

Issy took a good bowled wicket in her first over, in her second she was under pressure after the batter hit 2 consecutive 4’s. Megan then pulled out a great catch on the boundary saving what looked like a 6 shot. It was a great catch – the ball was in the air a long time and had been hit hard but Megan kept her eye on the ball and held on to it.

Tass bowled 2 consistent overs getting the ball in the right place and making the batters work for their runs – she conceded no extras and only went for a handful of runs. Super work Tass.

Erin bowled 2 good overs – unfortunately without the reward of a wicket - although there was a run out during her spell – on the final ball of her first over the batters went for a quick single, Lucy pounced on the ball and with a direct hit took a wicket.

Emily put the ball in the right place with her bowling – she was unlucky to be hit for a towering 6 which cleared Issy with arms stretched upwards on the boundary.

It was a dominant bowling and fielding display – getting the ball on target and generally fielding well.

Due to the 12 wickets lost Wiveliscombe only just cleared 200 runs recording 208.

We went into the batting knowing that we did not have to bat aggressively. Not every ball needed to be hit and scored off. If we just avoided losing wickets we knew we would win.

Issy and Lucy opened the batting – they always bat well as a pair running really well together and today was no exception. Lucy finished their partnership with a great last over taking 7 runs from it. Issy played a lovely nick off a straight ball to get a single. The opposition supporters were complimentary of both the bowled ball as well as the shot to pick the ball and get a run. Between them there were lots of quick singles and a couple of 2’s – they also both managed to score 4’s. Between them they took the score onto 219 – with the loss of only 1 wicket with the runs shared evenly between them.

Tass and Meghan were next in. They faced a bit more inconsistent bowling which made finding runs more difficult and meant they sometimes had to really dig the ball out in order to score the runs. They also faced one of the better bowlers (Noah) and as a result we lost 2 wickets in this period – both to Noah - and the partnership finished with the score still on 219.

Jessica and Emily were next to the crease. Emily was unfortunate on a couple of occasions to be denied 4’s - on one occasion the substitute fielder made a fantastic diving stop with only millimetres to spare, a great piece of fielding. They both called well and picked up several singles a couple of 2’s and one 3. Jessica played a lovely shot which was heading direct to a fielder but she realised she had time to make it to the other end and called for the run – it was a great piece of batting and a well judged run. At the end of their partnership the score had moved on to 234.

Ami and Erin were our final pair – they batted really well and never looked in trouble at the crease. Erin used her new bat to great effect plundering a lovely 4 and following that shot up with a really good blocking drive. Both were commented on by the opposition supporters - the 4 with a “That’s a great shot” and the follow up with a “That’s not bad either!” Well done Erin. She was also denied a 4 by the super sub who made another great saving dive. Ami played a good part in the partnership always looking solid and picking out singles here and there. They both communicated well with nice clear calling and confident running.

We finished our innings on 249 - I think we could have scored more if we needed to but we played a very good measured innings not taking any un-necessary risks.

All in all a good confident team display well done to all of you.

Many thanks to Simon for umpiring.

Good Luck to the girls playing in the cup game tomorrow at Whimple.
