Season Topping Score

Sunday morning in Staplegrove was a hot one. Megan Clark was our captain today and won the toss and elected to field.

Ami and Emily shared the wicket keeping duties and both did a great job as always.

We played Staplegrove a couple of weeks ago – they are a young team with a lot of promise – we beat them comfortably last time and we expected similar again today.

Our Opening 4 bowlers were Harper, Megan Clark, Emily and Megan Driskel. Harper was hit for a 4 off her third ball but this was the high point of the innings for this pair. Megan Clark conceded only 1 run from her over, Emily took a wicket with the last ball or her over and Megan Driskel took 2 wickets in her over – also losing 4 runs to byes. Great work from all 4 bowlers.

At the end of the first pair the score was nestled just below 200 on 199.

Our next bowlers were Emily, Issy, Lucy and Gemma. Emily bowled a solid over – mainly dot balls but she slipped in a wide just to keep us all interested. Issy took a wicket with the third ball of her over to deliver a wicket maiden. Lucy tempted the batter into a lofted shot which was taken well in the field by Megan (unfortunately I omitted the initial of which Megan it was). Gemma bowled a good over conceding only 2 runs.

At the end of the second pair the score was 193.

Erin, Lily, Harper and Megan Clark were next up. Erin stuttered a little in her over something a lot of bowlers experience – she stuck at it though and didn’t let her head drop and there was good support from her team mates – this support is something we have seen throughout the season and it shows great team work. Lily came in and delivered a typical Lily over. Fast and straight – taking a wicket with her last ball. Harper then delivered a maiden before Megan Clark stepped up to bag a double wicket maiden.

At the end of the third pair the score had slumped to 189.

Next up were Ami, Megan D, Ami and Issy.

But for a no ball with her last ball Ami would have had a maiden – in her second over she conceded only 2 runs – not a bad outing. Megan Driskel delivered a wicket maiden giving her 3 wickets in the match. Issy delivered another maiden over for her final over really pleasing to see Issy start to consistently bowl straight.

At the end of this pair the score had moved on to 187.

Our final bowlers were Lucy, Gemma, Erin and Lily. The last batting pair for Staplegrove started strongly taking a 4 and several singles in Lucy’s first over. Gemma pegged them back in her over by taking a wicket – this was a well taken catch by Lily – she had to move quickly to get to the right position but then took an excellent controlled catch.

Erin came back to the crease. She took 2 wickets in this over - she really focussed to get on top of the issues from her first over and she fully deserved the 2 wickets. Great bowling Erin.

Lily then bowled the final over There was the usual Lily wicket but most unusually there was a no – ball – that doesn’t happen very often for Lily – I think we’ll blame the heat.

At the end of the pair and the innings the score had moved onto 189.

At the innings changeover the opposition provided the team with ice pops – thanks very much to Staplegrove for that.

Megan Driskel and Erin opened the batting. Megan was in prime batting mode and was quite fluid with the bat and seemed to often be on strike. She and Erin ran really well together – there was some good calling and on 3 occasions they were able to run 3 – this was due to good shot placement good calling which put pressure on the fielders and good use of the overthrow. Megan also picked up 3 4’s. Erin was bowled in the first over and only faced 4 other balls but on those 4 had a 50% strike record. The pair scored 27 runs with Megan picking up 25 and Erin 2.

This pair moved the score onto 230.

Ami and Megan Clark were in next. There were a few more dot balls recorded in this pair and it took a while to get going. There were a couple of singles in the first over – the second over balls were a little harder to hit as they were a bit more wayward without being wides. In the third over of the pair Megan played a couple of lovely shots for 4 off consecutive balls which combined with a wide that they also snuck a run on meant the girls accumulated 13 runs in this over. In the final over Megan was bowled first ball Ami then picked up a good 4 and a solid 2.
At the end of this pair the score had moved onto 254.

Gemma and Emily were next to the crease. Emily started really positively playing 2 leg side deliveries beautifully and helping them down the hill to the boundary to claim 2 4’s. Emily played the ball onto the stumps in the pairs second over – something wasn’t quite right with the bats positioning and she was then run out in the final over after the girls chanced a single on a wicket keeper miss – but the run wasn’t really there. In their third over they ran singles off every ball – really confident and clear calling. Emily in particular I could hear from the boundary. She was also really positive with her encouragement of Gemma – praising some of Gemma’s good shots.

At the end of this pair the score had moved onto 266.

All of the innings so far had followed a similar pattern with 1 girl taking the bulk of the deliveries and the other playing more of a supporting role.
Issy and Lucy were next in and this pair also followed that pattern with Lucy being the dominant one of the pair today. Lucy picked up 4 fours for what I think is a seasons best of 21. Issy picked up 4 singles in her innings.

At the end of this pair the score had moved onto 295.

The final pair in were Lily and Harper – this pair also seemed to follow the same pattern as the previous pairs with Lily taking charge. She was in dominant form – striking 3 4’s in the first over; the pair also managed to run 2 3’s in this over.Lily repreated the haul of 3 4’s – although this time off consecutive balls - in the final over. Lily picked up 44 runs and Harper 5 off 4 deliveries. The only ball Harper didn’t score off was a wide.
We finished the innings on 352. A really good score against what was admittedly a weaker bowling attack – however that actually meant some of the runs were harder earned as the ball really had to be helped along.

There were some lovely straight drives from several members of the team. We only lost 5 wickets today which is much better than some recent matches

And that brings the season to a close. We have won every game and it has been really pleasing to see the team maintain the same team spirit that they had last season. We have integrated some new girls into the team over the course of a season and it’s been good to see everyone get on and play as a coherent unit.

I am hoping we will be able to organise some friendlies over the summer – so please don’t delete Pitchero just yet.

This group of girls have largely played as a team over the last 2 seasons - next year we have players leaving to go to colder wetter climes and we will also see some of the team move up to play in an older age group. I do not know the details of who will be playing where or who will be coaching where but looking back I think we have had a fabulous 2 years - I hope the girls have enjoyed playing cricket and training as much as I have enjoyed coaching, adminning and writing. They really have been a delight to work with.

There will be a presentation session for the whole youth section this year – last years was cancelled due to Covid which is why we went ahead with our own. The group one is pencilled in for the evening of Friday 10th September at 6pm. This is usually a bring a plate of food to share event. Hopefully Covid will have less of a presence by then and we will be able to return to something more of a normal evening.

Thanks for reading all this way,

Enjoy the rest of the sun – see you on Wednesday.
