Lots of Learning Opportunities

Our season opening game was a run out against St Andrews as part of the Brice-Nelson inter club cup.

We were lucky enough to be allowed to play at the Deane with a short park side boundary and a slightly longer “groundsman worrying” square boundary. It was a beautiful sunny evening to play cricket, although I was shivering in the shadows come the end.

Lily was our Captain today and shortly after 5 we met the opposition Captain for the toss. St Andrews won and elected to bowl.

The bowling of St Andrews was very good, more often than not straight down the wicket towards the stumps and this was something we struggled with throughout the innings, sometimes looking to play across the ball whilst not quite getting the timing right and consequently losing quite a few wickets. This severely hampered our ability to build a score.

Our opening pair comprised Megan Driskel and Lily Blackwell (our players player and coaches player of last season respectively). Both girls played some good shots and both picked up some good 4’s and also ran some good 1s and 2s. Between them the girls put on 24 runs for the loss of 5 wickets facing 2 wides. It was a tough start and they were facing a very good bowler which made batting difficult and makes the runs they managed to pick up more impressive.

Next in were Megan Clark and Gemma Quirk. They both managed to be slightly more defensive stalling the wicket count with some good defensive work and picking out the straight ball. Runs were slightly harder to come by though as the St Andrews team were quick to pounce on the ball in the field. Between them the girls bagged 6 runs and 1 bye, they faced 5 wides and lost 1 wicket.

Our third pair were Faith and Harper, both girls worked hard and played some attacking shots. Both picked up 4s and they also managed to run 3 on a single ball which is good going on a small pitch. The straight ball was again an issue during their innings. Between them they scored 15 runs losing 5 wickets.

Lucy and Issy were next in, they worked well as a pair running well together when they could and digging the ball out. Again, dealing with the straight ball proved tricky. Between them they scored 7 runs plus 5 in byes, they faced 1 wide and lost 4 wickets.

Our final pair were Emily Bird and Emily Cameron. They both worked hard against a tricky attack. Emily C took the game to the bowlers starting with a 4 off the first ball she faced and continued to play some great shots picking up 4 fours across her innings. This pair picked up 24 runs plus 9 byes facing 3 wides all for the loss of 3 wickets

The scoreboard says that the story of our innings was the wickets lost, 18 in total stripping 108 from any runs we made leaving us a total of 211. Whilst those are indeed the bare facts and we can learn from them it’s as important that we should also celebrate the good shots that were played against a good bowling team, we did score some good boundaries and we did on occasion play some good defensive shots our running between the wickets was also on the whole positive.

Above all the attitude of the girls throughout was very good it would have been easy to let the clatter of wickets get to them; but they stuck at it and enjoyed their time in the middle. The pick of our batters for me was Emily Cameron, she worked the ball really well around the field scoring consistently throughout her innings picking up 21 runs, well done Emily. Lily and Megan D were also excellent facing the pick of the opposition bowlers they both produced a strong showing scoring well.

We took to the field with the ball and it turned out that St Andrews could bat a bit as well. They had several strong batsmen who picked the right shots and consequently were able to find the boundary regularly, on several occasions clearing it with ease.

What was pleasing to see was despite facing this the girls continued to work hard and didn't let their heads drop. We took nine wickets across the innings shared out amongst almost the entire team.

Harper took a great catch on the boundary, Lily (I think) pounced on the ball in the field and produced a great run out. Emily C was very brave in the field running towards a very strongly hit ball in the shadows in front of the pavilion and trying to stop it. There was some good fielding all round.

There were some good efforts bowling with the ball. As a team though we are still bowling too many wides and no balls. We need to focus on our release point and also keeping our whole body heading towards the stumps as we run in and let fly, following through to help focus our direction.

Lily delivered our lowest scoring over going for only 2 in her first and was also the only bowler not to bowl any wides or no balls. Well done again Lily. Overall Emily Bird was our tightest bowler only going for 9 whilst also taking a wicket in the process – a really good performance and she should take confidence from that going into future matches – well done Emily.

Congratulations to St Andrews who scored 328 and won the game.

Our scorer this week was Zoe Cameron, ably assisted by Sarah Bird. Thank you both.

Technology wise the play cricket scoring app sort of worked although was playing catch-up at the start and some of the stats are a bit odd and there may be some discrepancies between paper and the app. More practice is needed.

Thanks to Keith for arranging for us to play at the Deane and for unlocking, locking up, helping to set up and also clear up.

Thanks to the parents for getting everyone there on time.

See you at training on Wednesday.

Instructions

At the moment we think the match will be 10 aside although I am waiting for confirmation from the opposition with regards to their numbers.

Please note the start time has been adjusted, we will try and start at 5 so as to make the most of the light (as with numbers I am still waiting on confirmation of this from the opposition).

Current ECB guidelines are that each player is allowed 1 spectator. And you must socially distance while in the ground. I know that other sports may be more lax but we need to ensure we stick to the guidelines of the governing body.

For this first game we have picked players who were here last year so will already be familiar with the format etc. You will all get games this year so please don't worry! If you have not been picked you may still be called on as a sub if someone drops out before Friday.

If you have been picked, please can you confirm that you will play.

Match fees are £2, preferably paid on arrival.
