Taunton Deane 2nd XI slipped to defeat in their first away game of the season to North Petherton in a low-scoring affair.
North Petherton batted first and made a good start before losing Harry Bowditch (14). Fellow Opener Adam Burns (23) and debutante Pakistan U19's & Lahore star Ali Zaryab Asif (16) saw the host to 61-2.
Petherton then slipped from 61-2 to 88-8, Sam Burgess was the pick of the Deane attack with 4-25, Matt Derham (2-16) and Sam McClure (2-15) chipping in also with some smart glove work along the way which saw Deane Keeper Dave Jones claim a catch and two stumpings.
It needed a late cameo from Thomas Lambert (20*) to guide the home side to their eventual total of 117 in the 39th over.
Burgess and Ali Warren fell early in the reply as Deane slipped to 7-2 thanks to strong opening spells and a wicket apiece for Ben Meek (1-28) and Farran Gregory (1-14).
The Pakistan U19 International Asif then ran through the Deane middle order to claim figures 10 over, 5 maidens, 3 wickets for just 10 runs including the key scalp of Deane captain Russell Jones for a patient 17.
The Deane innings crept towards its target under the watchful eye of Dave Jones who battled to 28 before becoming the first of two quick wickets for Paul Short (2-13). This saw the final few Deane wickets fall in a flurry despite a late counterattacking blow from Ben Osbourne (9*) who was left stranded with the Deane 25 runs short.
Deane 2’s are in cup action twice this week hosting West Monkton 1st XI on Wednesday in the Baker Cup and then Chard 1st XI on Friday in the Somerset Cup. Both games are 6pm starts at The Convent Field.
