The Crusaders travelled to Wembdon for the first of 2 games this bank holiday weekend.
As the sun shone skipper John Ponte re-found his form and lost the toss. The Crusaders were asked to bat. After the early losses of Chris Whyborn (2) and Will Mumby (0) to consecutive deliveries Jacob Arscott and Barry Jones (28) batted nicely until Jones holed out to deep square leg. Enter James Mumby who played an intelligent innings until falling for 47. With a maiden hundred in sight Jacob Arscott was bowled for 94, an innings of deft touches mixed with brutal hitting and a lot of class. A quirky cameo from Paul Arscott (39 no) enabled the Crusaders to finish 236-5 off their 40 overs.
A most enjoyable tea followed.
Jack Damon (1-28) and Robin Liney (1-18) opened the bowling and both bowled beautifully. The first wicket of the Wembdon innings came courtesy of an unusual source, pouched at 3rd slip by George Loker. Wickets fell regularly throughout, Loker impressing with 1-23 off his 8. John Ponte with 3-7 off 8 and Phil Batstone 3-10 off 5 were the main beneficiaries of a week Wembdon batting line up. The innings and match ending with the second unusual wicket source, a 2nd slip catch by John Ponte !!!!
A much needed and well deserved first win of the season.
