Diamonds sparkle in County Under 19 tournament

Deane Diamonds shine best when it counts

Deane Diamonds produce a sensational performance to win the first Somerset County under 19's Tournament.

In a T10 format held at both Weston Super Mare and Uphill Castle CC ground the Deane were drawn against Weston Super Kings and Wellington Warriors in the group stage. Any lose would probably see the Deane eliminated.

A convincing win over an under strength Weston Super Kings in their first game which included 5 wickets for Charlie Norman including a Hat Trick from just 2 overs meant another win over Wellington would see them through to the semi final stage. Despite an early collapse the Deane recovered well with Ed Mellor leading the way. Another fine all round bowling performance saw Wellington fall well short in their chase.

The semi final was against the Glastonbury Thorns who had convincingly won the first 2 games scoring over 100 runs each. Deane lost the toss and batted first. With steady progress they managed to score 76 a defendable score. In reply Glastonbury against some very good Diamonds bowling Glastonbury fell short scoring 60 runs.

So to the main game of the day, the final. Deane Diamonds versus local rivals The Saints (Taunton St Andrews) The Saints did well to reach the final scrapping 2 final over and very tense victories.

Batting first Deane Openers Harry Thomas and Calvin Harrison were outstanding with birthday boy Harry Thomas particularly punishing anything lose. He soon retired on 30 replaced by Captain Henry Mellor who fell cheaply chipping to mid wicket. Henry was replaced by brother Ed. Calvin and Ed continued to apply pressure on the Saints attack with Calvin reaching his 30 and retiring to be replaced by Matt Derham.
The it was the Ed Mellor show who took apart previous Saints start Jess Mooney in the final over and finishing again unbeaten on 30 off the last ball of the innings as the Deane Diamonds posted an amazing 113 on a tricky pitch.

Buoyed by their batting success the Diamonds went into the field brimming full of confidence and the dismissal of the very dangerous Ed Byrom would of massively deflated The Saints hearts. The once The Saints had lost the dependable Harden it was always going to be an enormous task. Despite a few nice blows from ex Deane boy Harry Clements The Saints finished 46 runs short sparking Diamonds celebrations.

The young greens should be very proud of their efforts and were well lead by their Captain Henry Mellor. Congratulations to you all
