Where there's no Will there's a way

On a glorious Sunday morning we turned up to play Broadway. In our previous match against them we took what can only be described as a thorough tonking – when they had a bowling day that they have apparently been unable to repeat this season. They were lacking their 3 wicket taking Will this week and although that may have made a difference I think we played much better than we did in the first game.

The scorer did not have a great start to the day, leaving all pencils at home and also spilling coffee on the keyboard risking the entry into the trial database being used. However he did finally manage to take a team photo.

Megan was our Captain today in what was her first game against the team she played for last season. She won the toss and elected to field.

Our volunteer wicket keepers today were Jasmine and Nerys. Jasmine was unlucky not to take a catch as wicket keeper – I think the August sun affected her positioning for the ball – but it was very close.

We had a much tighter bowling display than we managed last week only bowling 8 wides and 1 no ball – a much better set of figures.
Our tightest bowler this week was Emily bowling 2 great overs conceding only 3 runs, taking 1 wicket off the batsman’s foot and bowling no wides giving her figures of 2-0-1-3.

Not far behind was Lily – another good bowling display – again no wides but also taking 2 wickets in her second over giving her figures of 2-0-2-4.

And again not far behind her was Ami – recovered from a sore neck which hampered her training in midweek she came back and bowled 2 good spells taking a wicket in her first over and conceding only 5 runs over all – again with no wides bowled – giving her figures of 2-0-1-5

Nerys also bowled beautifully – no wickets for her but also no wides bowled and only going for 5 runs – figures of 2-0-0-5.

Well done to all the girls the bowling and fielding was really good - I thought our fielding was a little bit more alive this week – perhaps the gloomy cold weather last week affected things but this week we were much sharper - there was a particularly good one handed stop in the field by Megan Clark late on in the Broadway innings.

The final score for Broadway was 243 – this was a manageable target for us if we could keep our wickets together.

Our opening pair were Lily and Megan Driskell.

They put the pressure on the bowlers from the off – in the first 4 overs there were only 2 dot balls – they ran almost every bye they could and were fluent with the bat as well. After 4 overs the pair had taken us to 220 runs between them with 5 for Lily and 12 for Megan (along with 6 byes and 1 wide) a really good solid start to the game. We did lose our first wicket in this period but because of the running between the wickets and the good stroke play it did not affect our score too badly.

Our next pair were Jas and Erin – they had a good solid start to their pairing with a nicely run 1 and a well struck 2 from Erin. Our final wicket was lost in this pairing with Jas bowled by a good straight ball in the third over for the pair but between them they still managed to push the score on to 230 with 4 for Jas and 6 for Erin.

Megan Clark and Nerys were next up they faced some good bowling in their first over and only managed to run 2 byes. In the next Nerys played a couple of lovely shots to score consecutive 2’s. The third over was again a tough one with there being a number of dot balls and not really able to get bat on ball. At the end of their spell the score had moved on to 244 – with Nerys adding 6 and Megan Clark 2 – they also managed to run 5 in byes and there was some good clear communication between the pair.

Our final pair were Ami and Emily – we were in the unusual situation of already having the game in the bag we just needed to bat sensibly and take no chances and the girls did this beautifully. There were a couple of “Yes No” calls on runs but we managed to preserve our wickets. Both Emily and Ami batted solidly taking runs where they could. Ami finished our innings on the last ball with what both scorers thought was the shot of the day – a lovely straight drive back past the bowler and but for the long grass it would have been a 4. The pair pushed us onto 256 with Ami adding 5 and Emily 3.

Our top scorers this week were Megan (12), Erin (6) and Nerys (6) but all girls contributed runs.

Wicket adjusted top scorers see all 3 girls tied on 6. Well done to all.

As the opposition only had 7 players Emily Bird and Megan Driskell volunteered to field for 4 overs each – thank you to both for doing this. They both did really well in fact Megan very nearly did too well as there were a couple of occasions when she very nearly ran a couple of our players out!

The opposition picked player of the match was Lily – a good spell of batting and running and again lovely work with the ball in her hand.

Stevens player of the match was Megan Driskell – a good batting spell and working well in tandem with Lily to really put pressure on the opposition in the opening partnership.

In a new category this week the Umpire of the match award goes to Steven.
