Taunton Deane 1st XI with several key players returning, had their first league victory since May with a hard fought win against Bristol at The Convent Field.
The Deane won the toss and decided to bat, and that decision was vindicated by openers Rob Woodman and Sam Underdown who got the innings off to a steady start. They put on 86 before Underdown was unfortunately run out for a very well made 52.
Woodman was then joined by John Rogers. Both looked comfortable, playing risk free cricket and scoring steadily. The pair took the score to 184 in the 36th over, and the Deane looked set for a big total. Then in what can only be described as a bizarre incident, the innings changed. Rogers, who was on 49, hit the ball to the boundary , but in the process stood on his stumps.
Woodman was caught on the boundary 2 overs later for an excellent 77. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, and the Deane finished with a competitive, but below par 257 off their 50 overs. For Bristol, Hardwick finished with the outstanding figures of 6-43 from his 10 overs.
To have a chance of winning, the Deane knew their bowlers would have to bowl well. They did just that. An excellent display of disciplined and patient bowling saw the Deane pick up wickets at crucial moments and keep the run rate in check. Opening bowlers Liam Redrup (2-54) and Rob Pryke (3-46) bowled well at the start and end of the innings.
However, it was the middle overs when the pace was taken off the ball, that turned the match the Deane’s way. Somerset spinner Jack Leach (2-20) was outstanding with an immaculate display of slow bowling. He was well supported Woodman and Luke Whitear.
Useful contributions from Ellison (54), Hardwick (39) and Young (32) ensured that Bristol remained in contention throughout. However, good bowling backed up by good fielding gave the Deane a 12 run victory as Bristol finished with 8-245 off their 50 overs.
The Deane travel to Downend on Saturday where they will look to secure back to back wins.
