Cavaliers still unbeaten

The Cavaliers made it four wins out of four with a maximum point victory over newly promoted Winscombe at their new home at Pitminster. On what was a fine batting wicket the Cavaliers were inserted and lost Dave Stephenson early on. Val Semillien in his first game of the season was playing positively until a mix up with skipper Axon led to him being run out for 31. Axon then ran out Ryan Marsh trying to take a single that wasn’t there. After Tom Burgess departed for 13 and Axon for 25, the Cavaliers looked to be in trouble, at 80 for 5. Demonstrating their strength in depth this season John Eamer and Ed Mellor then provided a match winning partnership Eamer in particular was feasting on the short pitched bowling unfurling a range of cuts and pulls including 2 sixes. After a partnership of 90 Eamer then departed for 56. Mellor then top edged to third man for 31, and when Tom Walsh departed the Cavaliers were left with some work to do to get maximum batting points. John House with 16 and last pair Ben Redwood and Steve Giles were up to the task as the Cavaliers reached 200 before being bowled out in the 42nd over.

Winscombe started positively with skipper Hutchinson and Coe playing positively until Coe chipped one to mid-off from Tom Walsh. On a superb batting wicket with little in it for the bowlers the Cavaliers decided that tight bowling was to be the order of the day as Steve Giles and John House tightened the Cavaliers’ grip on the game with House picking up the wicket of Searle for 6. A quick 17 from Bailey threatened to give Winscombe a way back in the game until he swung at Tom Burgess’s second ball and succeeded in top edging for keeper Marsh to make a fine running catch. It was proving to be a bad day for skippers and running between the wickets as Hutchinson was involved to two run outs one of which Steve Giles hitting direct from square leg. It was left to Burgess (3 for 10) and Redwood (2 for 8) to wrap up the tail and bowl the visitors out for 119.
